Section 1 | Mass Standards Section

Overview

Overview

The Mass Standards Section of the National Metrology Laboratory is the country’s provider of traceability to the international prototype kilogram. It is also the premier authority in the verification, calibration and performance testing of weights, mass standards, and weighing instruments. It has been granted the ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation by the Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH (German Accreditation Body) on 19 October 2010. Aside from providing traceability, the MSS also offers other metrological services such as training, proficiency testing, measurement audit and consultancy.

Calibration Procedure

Calibration of Weights: OIML Class

This procedure involves:

  • the verification of an OIML weight for its compliance with the metrological and technical requirements of the OIML Recommendation 111; and
  • its calibration with results in conventional mass by direct comparison using double substitution weighing. This technique includes the comparison of one weight with another of equal nominal value but with a higher OIML classification.

Calibration of Mass Standards: Free Nominal Values

This procedure applies to mass standards with free nominal values. The free nominal values are present beyond +/- 3 times of the selected class of OIML R111. This procedure involves the calibration of weights with results in conventional mass by direct comparison using double substitution weighing.  This technique involves the comparison of one sample weight with a combination of up to four reference weights equal to or near the nominal value of the sample weight.

Calibration of Mass Standards: Non-OIML

This procedure applies to mass standards that are non-OIML and OIML weights but do not comply with the metrological and technical requirements of the OIML R111 It involves calibration with results in conventional mass by direct comparison using double substitution weighing. This technique involves the comparison of one weight with another of equal nominal value.

Accreditation

The Mass Standards Section of the National Metrology Laboratory of the Philippines is competent under the terms of ISO/IEC 17O25:2OO5 to carry out calibration of Mass standards.
